A Study on the Factors affecting on the Out of Home Care Needs of Families of People with Psychiatric Disabilities
Kim Moon-Geun

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting the out of home care needs of families of people with psychiatric disabilities(PPD). In this study out of home care needs were defined as the need for hospital, board and care home, group home for the PPD. The author hypothesized disabilities of PPD, family burden, emotional attitude of families, families¡¯ perception of social prejudice to PPD affect the needs for out of home care directly and indirectly. Subjects of this study were 324 pairs of PPD and their family members sampled all around the country. In this study the structural equation modelling was used to analyse the data. The results show that the major hypotheses made in this study were accepted based on structural equation model analyses. First, disabilities of PPD affected the out of home care needs of families indirectly through the mediation of family burden and emotional attitudes of families. Second, the effects of family burden on the out of home care needs were mediated through the emotional attitude of families. Third, families¡¯ perception of social prejudice had negative effects on the out of home care needs directly, but it had positive effects on the needs for out of home care through the mediation of family burden and emotional attitude of families. Based on the results of this study the author suggested the clinical interventions such as family education to improve the families¡¯ understanding of psychiatric disabilities and to enhance families¡¯ positive emotional attitude toward PPD. Also specified interventions focused on the reduction of social prejudice against PPD were suggested.
